The Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) Camp is a one-week day camp for high school students interested in vehicles and the latest technology. Students learn about connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technology and explore career opportunities in a cutting-edge industry that is shaping the future of transportation. During the camp, students will see, touch, and experience automated vehicles, take field trips to organizations working on CAV technology, and engage in learning activities with practitioners and University of Minnesota researchers. New in 2026, campers will pair up to build an automated, electric skateboard. Students will assemble Lectec skateboards and program the onboard computer to simulate an advanced driver-assist system, incorporating team building, engineering, programming, and robotics. Students will get to show off their systems at the camp closing ceremony.
The camp aims to inform and engage communities through demonstrations and other public-facing events, and to help build the future workforce by educating students in CAV-related disciplines. Past activities have included programming robots, identifying community-level transportation challenges and brainstorming CAV-focused solutions, and visiting facilities like SICK Sensor Intelligence and the 3M Innovation Center to learn about industrial applications of sensors and robotics, and advancements in pavement markings for automated vehicle safety. Campers have also visited the Human Factors Safety Lab to learn about human behavior and transportation systems, ridden in the MnCAV Ecosystem automated vehicle, and tested a virtual reality driving simulator.
