This camp offers high school students a unique opportunity to apply advanced mathematical concepts to real-world challenges under the guidance of university faculty and student mentors.
The University of Minnesota - IMA-MathCEP Math Modeling Camp is a week-long, in-person program for high school students designed to deepen their understanding of mathematics through real-world applications. Participants will engage in hands-on experiments and interactive activities, working collaboratively on open-ended modeling problems. The camp focuses on developing practical solutions to complex issues, such as predicting disease spread, analyzing traffic flow, or assessing climate impacts on natural resources. Students will gain skills in mathematical analysis, problem-solving, and teamwork, culminating in presentations of their findings to peers and university instructors. The curriculum covers topics outside the traditional school setting, encouraging students to explore mathematics from diverse perspectives.
Students are expected to be on campus from approximately 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM each day, participating in hands-on experiments, interactive activities, and collaborative work on mathematical modeling problems.
The ideal student is a high schooler who has completed a year-long course in single variable calculus and is eager to apply mathematical skills to real-world problems in a collaborative environment.
