The MPS Summer Scholars - GEMS-GISE STEM Academy offers a four-week, all-day program for students entering grades 1-8, focusing on project-based and problem-based learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students engage in hands-on activities that integrate reading and math skills, providing relevant, real-world connections and career explorations. The program offers options for participation in GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science), GISE (Guys in Science and Engineering), or combined groups. Example courses for younger students (grades 1-3) include "Amazing Structures: Buildings and Bridges" and "STEM in the Gym," while grades 3-4 might explore "Biomedical Investigations" and "Roller Coaster Science." For grades 5-8, courses can include "Skateboard Science," "Engineering the Ride," "Journalism," and "Everest Trek." There are also one-week STEM Blast academies for grades 5-8 at Sullivan, with topics like drones, solar exploration, and balsawood engineering. The American Indian STEAM Experience, offered at Anishinabe Academy, emphasizes Indigenous ways of knowing and learning, incorporating Ojibwe and Dakota language, culture-based stories, Indigenous star knowledge, and traditional and contemporary art alongside STEM concepts.
