About this camp

The Macalester College Chemistry RISE (Refresher in STEM Education) Workshop is a free, virtual, one-week program designed for students considering taking General Chemistry I (CHEM 111) in the fall. The workshop focuses on algebraic skills heavily utilized in undergraduate general chemistry coursework, serving as a math refresher rather than introducing new chemical content. Participants will watch pre-recorded videos on various topics before attending live, virtual problem-solving sessions led by current Macalester student mentors. During these synchronous Zoom meetings, students will work through problems in small groups, fostering connections with future classmates and mentors. Additional practice problems are provided after each session for independent study. The workshop aims to refresh mathematical skills crucial for general chemistry, helping students focus on new chemical concepts during their fall coursework and build a support system within the college community.
